Kith & Kin Success Story:
SOFIA + ALEX*
At four years old, Alex was expelled from preschool. His parents turned to Sofia, a family friend, to provide care for Alex so they could keep working. One day, Sofia and Alex were at a community center. An Candelen team member, Anita, saw Sofia struggling with Alex’s behavior. Anita approached Sofia to help and informed her of the services Candelen provides. From positive behavior guidance to daily schedule planning and nutrition, Candelen could help Sofia set limits and create routines that support both her and Alex. Sofia was eager to sign up. She confided in Anita that her children were witnessing Alex’s outbursts and behavior, and had been on the receiving end of his physical aggression.
Over the next few weeks, Anita worked with Sofia to set limitations and guidelines for her household, starting with restricting Alex’s access to TV and electronic devices. Together, Anita and Sofia identified Alex’s need for an energetic outlet. They purchased a trampoline and it quickly became Alex’s favorite activity. By establishing routines and integrating positive reinforcement, Alex’s behavior began to improve, and he was able to go back to preschool.
Today, he’s a much better listener, follows directions, and cooperates with others. Anita and Sofia couldn’t be more proud of his progress and their accomplishments.
